6 Principles for Therapy
Here are some ideas that guide my approach to counseling.
You’re not the problem, the problem is the problem.
Problems arise when people get stuck in negative feedback loops and destructive interpersonal patterns. I try to help you untangle these knots and get closer to the core of who you are.
Symptoms are the mind’s best attempt at a cure.
Anxiety, depression, nightmares, addiction–as painful as these states can be, they served a function, they kept us going. Understanding how these symptoms helped us is the first step in overcoming their hold on us.
The therapeutic alliance is the key to healing.
A working alliance between you and me means collaboration and trust. I’ll stick with you, side by side, as we explore the parts of your life that have been hurting and hidden.
You’re the expert in you.
Experience and training can help reveal patterns, but every person is one of a kind. I’m interested in your unique experience, and in hearing your story – how you got here, and where you want to go next.
Imagination and play are the underlying mechanisms of all curative interventions.
Imagination, creativity, and dreams are not just frivolous indulgences. They’re the key to getting unstuck and finding a way to live more creatively. I strive to work with your innate creativity in creating a playful therapeutic relationship.
Insight is critical, but it’s nothing without real emotional experience.
Insight comes when you least expect it, and it can make all the difference. But we come to therapy to feel different, and that only comes through emotional experiences, experiences that we share in the consulting room and that you practice out there in the real world.
“This gives us our indication for therapeutic procedure – to afford opportunity for formless experience, and for creative impulses, motor and sensory, which are the stuff of playing. And on the basis of playing is built the whole of man’s experiential existence.”
